We
are well underway with the planning for this
year's annual Wildwood Spring Cleanup. We need
volunteers and trucks, so mark your calendars
now. We shall meet as usual at the Community
Hall the Saturday morning after the May long
weekend (May 19th this year)l to scour all of
Wildwood's back alleys removing the assorted
debris and branches which have built up since
last year. The
City of Calgary has confirmed use of their large
compactor trucks, but we'll need our usual contingent
of trucks and volunteers to make this event
go smoothly.
New
this year is the Truck contest! Prizes for the
oldest truck, the newest truck and the best
decorated truck. So get your vehicles spruced
up for some community action. Bring
your coveralls and work gloves and join in!
The event starts at 8am SHARP
rain or shine and it's usually all done by noon.
It's a great opportunity to meet your neighbours,
enjoy some refreshments and help your community.
As
a reminder, we request Wildwood residents closely
follow these guidelines in an effort to contain
volumes and speed up this volunteer cleanup
effort
- Major
house/yard renovation debris (drywall, studs,
broken concrete, sod, etc) is the homeowner's/contractor's
responsibility to remove
- Please assist the volunteers by cutting tree
clippings to a reasonable size and tying into
bundles
- Do not leave out old paint and/or chemical
containers. Instead, these should be taken directly
to the 45th Street firehall on the designated
Toxic Material Roundup Day (usually held each
spring) or one of the four firehalls which take
these hazardous materials on a year-round basis.
If you leave them out, you will run the risk
they will be left and perhaps be vandalized,
causing damage to your property or your neighbours'.
- We will have a metal bin on site, but we can't
take old fridges or freezers due to freon disposal
regulations. Nor can we take old propane bottles
unless the valves have first been removed. And
please, no old tires as these cannot be compacted.
- Please have your items in the back alley prior
to 8am Saturday, May 24, so you're not missed.
Clearly mark any back alley treasures
you may want to keep (old lumber, paving stones,
etc.) as our volunteers are quite thorough.
It has also been suggested that we
try to clean-up the garbage in the green spaces!
We will provide plastic bags, gloves, the garbage
trucks and refreshments. But we need someone
to coordinate this and some walkers, nature
lovers and dog walkers to come out on the clen
up day. Please phone 244-5854 if you can help
with this.
Contact
Clive Watson if you have any
questions at 244-5854.
